GRASS HUT

I just recently moved out here to Portland, Oregon from Tampa, Florida, so you might notice a lot of posts having to do with this and surrounding areas. My first one is about GRASS HUT, a studio, gallery, and shop. The studio is home to Bwana Spoons and Justin “Scrappers” Morrison. Head over to their site now to see some amazing photos and artwork. February 1st, they will have a new toy available: “The newest toy by Ojo Rojo, masterfully executed by Kyoka Ikeda of Gargame, even has movable limbs! Those in attendance at the opening will get first dibs on the new little guy, but they will also be available online the following day.”   grass hut toy figure

Thanks to Juxtapoz for the heads up.

Musical secrets of Da Vinci

Da Vinci's Last Supper

“An Italian musician and computer technician claims to have uncovered musical notes encoded in Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper,” raising the possibility that the Renaissance genius might have left behind a somber composition to accompany the scene depicted in the 15th-century wall painting.” “Pala, a 45-year-old musician who lives near the southern Italian city of Lecce, began studying Leonardo’s painting in 2003, after hearing on a news program that researchers believed the artist and inventor had hidden a musical composition in the work.” “In a book released Friday in Italy, Pala explains how he took elements of the painting that have symbolic value in Christian theology and interpreted them as musical clues.”

The result is a 40-second “hymn to God” that Pala said sounds best on a pipe organ, the instrument most commonly used in Leonardo’s time for spiritual music. A short segment taken from a CD of the piece contained a Bach-like passage played on the organ.”

Grzegorz Jonkajtys

I wanted to do a post on the amazingly talented Polish artist Grzegorz Jonkajtys. What made me aware of him is the ridiculous good trailer for his short “ARK” or “ARKA” in Polish. While working on a short for the Warsaw studio, Platige Image, he walked along side thousands of burial shelves carved into walls of tunnels, and imagined being inside a large ship. “I thought of a huge oil tanker with networks inside of what looks like graves that are platforms for people.” From that vision he developed a script about an ark carrying the only survivors on earth of an unknown virus. Six years later this film was nominated for a Golden Palm for Best Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival, received a Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction, won Best of Show at SIGGRAPH over 905 submissions, and because of the SIGGRAPH win, is in the running for an Oscar nomination. Visit his site HERE.  I am trying to find details on a dvd release.
